The Municipality of Piacenza will be celebrating World Cystic Fibrosis Day on Monday, September 8th, by lighting Palazzo Farnese in blue.
Cystic fibrosis (formerly called cystic fibrosis) is a generally serious disease, present from birth because it is caused by a mutation in the CFTR gene. Those born with the disease have inherited a copy of the mutated gene from both their father and mother. Both father and mother are, almost always unknowingly, healthy carriers of one copy of this gene, which normally determines the synthesis of a protein called CFTR (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator), responsible for the regular functioning of secretions in many organs. This protein functions poorly or not at all in those born with two copies of the mutated gene. In Italy, there is one healthy carrier in approximately 30 people. A carrier couple, with each pregnancy, has a one-in-four chance of having an affected child, that is, with two copies of the mutated gene.
