Our Lady of the Milk, surrounded by saints
Anonymous Painter | 14th century
Currently in display: Palazzo Farnese Civic Museum, Art Gallery
The Virgin, with her gentle and graceful features, is surrounded by six figures of saints, of whom only Saint Anthony and Saint John the Baptist can be identified. The painting is characterised by broad strokes of colour. The composition is typical of the religious art of that period: the main subject (the Madonna and Child), considered the most important, is depicted in an imposing manner and out of proportion to the other figures. The aim is to highlight the main subject and to make the so-called ‘important’ figures stand out more than the others. In that period, the concept of devotion took precedence over the pursuit of realism.
